HISTORY Of THE ANNUAL
UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY
WITH FAMOUS MEMORIES.

At the beginning of United Nations General Assembly
In 1947
No country wanted to open the speeches.
So Brazil voluntarily stepped forward to be the first to speak.
Since 1947, this tradition has been established with the annual address,
Being initiated by the Secretary-General,
Followed by Brazil,
Followed by the United States as the host country.
This custom was only broken twice, in 1983 and 1984,
for protocol reasons or the late arrival of the Brazilian delegation.
So since 1947
During the week beginning September 23,
The high-level general debate begins,
With world leaders taking the stage,
To deliver their speeches,
After Brazil and the United States.
The order of speakers is determined,
By
Level of representation,
Personal importance,
Geographical balance,
And even timing of arrival.
Mostly remembered incident was in October 1960,
When Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev removed and banged,
His shoe on a desk during general assembly debate.
Another similar incident in 2006,
When the famous phrase from Hugo Chavez in UN speech:
“THE DEVIL CAME HERE YESTERDAY,
AND IT SMELLS OF SULFUR STILL TODAY”
Although the time allotted for each speech is 15 minutes,
Many leaders exceed it.
Perhaps the longest speech in the history of the General Assembly,
Was by Cuban leader Fidel Castro in 1960,
Which lasted four and a half hours,
While the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi,
Spoke for more than an hour and a half in 2009;
Although the Brazilian Foreign Minister,
Often delivers the opening speech,
In some sessions,
And in particular urgent task
The country’s president,
who’s calling the Assembly meeting,
Being the first to address
His major political messages.
